Classroom Fun: Spooky Mason Jar Lanterns

Students will create Halloween lanterns using mason jars, tissue paper, and LED tea lights. This project encourages creativity and can be used as a fun decoration.
Materials (per student):
- Mason jar or recycled glass jar – $1-$2 each (bulk packs available)
- Tissue paper (various colors, especially orange, black, white) – $0.50 per student
- Mod Podge or white glue (small amount per student) – about $0.50
- LED tea lights – $0.50 each (bulk packs available)
- Black construction paper (for spooky face cutouts) – less than $0.10
- Small paintbrush – $1 each (can be reused for future projects)
- Scissors – reusable classroom supply
Instructions:
- Have students cut out small pieces of tissue paper (in various Halloween colors).
- Paint the mason jar with a thin layer of Mod Podge or white glue.
- Stick the tissue paper pieces onto the jar to cover the surface and make a colorful design.
- While the jar dries, students can cut out spooky shapes (like faces or bats) from black construction paper and glue them onto the jar.
- Once dry, place an LED tea light inside to create a glowing lantern effect.
Educational Value:
- Teaches layering and mixed media art.
- Allows students to create something functional and festive for Halloween.
