Classroom Fun: Spooky Mason Jar Lanterns

21st Oct 2024

Students will create Halloween lanterns using mason jars, tissue paper, and LED tea lights. This project encourages creativity and can be used as a fun decoration.

Materials (per student):

  1. Mason jar or recycled glass jar – $1-$2 each (bulk packs available)
  2. Tissue paper (various colors, especially orange, black, white) – $0.50 per student
  3. Mod Podge or white glue (small amount per student) – about $0.50
  4. LED tea lights – $0.50 each (bulk packs available)
  5. Black construction paper (for spooky face cutouts) – less than $0.10
  6. Small paintbrush – $1 each (can be reused for future projects)
  7. Scissors – reusable classroom supply

Instructions:

  1. Have students cut out small pieces of tissue paper (in various Halloween colors).
  2. Paint the mason jar with a thin layer of Mod Podge or white glue.
  3. Stick the tissue paper pieces onto the jar to cover the surface and make a colorful design.
  4. While the jar dries, students can cut out spooky shapes (like faces or bats) from black construction paper and glue them onto the jar.
  5. Once dry, place an LED tea light inside to create a glowing lantern effect.

Educational Value:

  • Teaches layering and mixed media art.
  • Allows students to create something functional and festive for Halloween.
